2nd International Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences 2017

THEME – EMERGING TRENDS IN MULTICULTURALISM

The trend of multiculturalism, pluralism and diversity has become a norm in many modern societies. Mega cities are becoming more and more diverse than ever before. Diversity is the core of multiculturalism, which is defined by different socio-cul-eco-political forces that shape its process and progress. Booming globalization, market economics and consumer culture constitute some of the determinants and therefore, inalienable elements of contemporary world. Countries, such as, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Canada, Singapore, UK, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Australia and New Zealand are leading multicultural societies. The development of multiculturalism has been described as a salad bowl and cultural mosaic. It is the existence of multiple cultural traditions within a single country. The connection between the migration and multiculturalism cannot be denied. The world is seen as a global village, a global state, and a multicultural state. Is there any escape from the multiculturalism?

Both India and Indonesia stand for democratic values, diverse population and plural cultures. This commonality offers an apt environment to develop academic ties and exchange variety of viewpoints that would facilitate build up an understanding towards a sustainable future.

Being the most populous democracy and plural society, India celebrates its multiculturalism based on the concept on unity in diversity. The culture of India has been shaped by its unique historical, geographical and demographic roots that are several millennia old. India’s languages, religions, dance, music, architecture, cuisine, clothing, literary style, festivals, customs and traditions differ from place to pace within the county, but nevertheless possess a commonality. India has the world’s largest population of some non-Indian origin religions as well, such as Bahai faith and Zoroastrianism. According to 2001 Census of India, India has 122 major languages and 1599 other languages.

Multicultural ideologies and policies vary widely, ranging from the advocacy of equal respect to the various cultures in a society, to policies of promoting the maintenance of cultural diversity. Multiculturalism that promotes maintaining the distinctiveness of multiple cultures is often contrasted to other settlement policies such as social cohesion, integration, cultural assimilation and racial segregation. Nonetheless, multiculturalism implies that there is a connection and appreciation between different cultures. It is also about the way to respond to cultural and religious differences, a particular set of philosophical ideas, or a specific orientation by government or institutions toward a diverse population. It is closely associated with identity politics, the politics of difference, and the politics of recognition.

The concept of multiculturalism aims at different forms of knowledge, disciplines and academic fields. The objective of this international conference on Multiculturalism is-

  1. Understanding the recent trends in multiculturalism with interdisciplinary perspective
  2. Providing platform to recent researches based on subjective representations of multiculturalism in various disciplines
  3. Comprehending the notion of multiculturalism from the standpoint of subjective reality in different countries
  4. Creating a dialogue on contemporary trends in multiculturalism with intersectional perspective

The international conference is an attempt to provide forum to participants to deliberate on these important concerns.
